Carine Ayélé DURAND

MEG presents its Director, Carine Ayélé DURAND.

Carine Ayélé DURAND is Director of the MEG since July 1, 2022, after having been director ad interim for 5 months. Hired in 2015 as Chief Curator in charge of the Collections Unit, Carine Ayélé DURAND is also a graduate of the University of Aix-en-Provence (France) with a DEA in Ethnology and a Master's degree in International Negotiations.

Born in 1975, Carine Ayélé DURAND has dedicated herself for more than twenty years to the study, management and development of heritage collections, exhibitions and visual arts. After a first experience as a guide for the ethnographic collections at the African Museum of Verona (Italy) in 2000, she began her career in 2001 at the Natural History Museum of Lyon (France), now the Museum of Confluences, as the curator in charge of the Americas collections. She specialized in the field of material culture and visual arts, working closely with indigenous peoples in the Arctic, the Brazilian Amazon and Canada.


Dr Durand has held a variety of curatorial and research positions, including anthropological museums in the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden, theaters in Brazil and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. She has curated several exhibitions on contemporary Indigenous art and Indigenous political movements for the Museum of Confluences (Inuit 2002-2003), the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge (Northern Skies, Southern Stars 2006, Sápmi 2010), and the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm (Sápmi 2007). Between February 2011 and August 2015, she has been a cultural heritage consultant in Barcelona (Spain).


Carine Ayélé DURAND was hired in 2015 by the City of Geneva as chief curator of the MEG. In this position, she was responsible for the logistical organization of the transfer of the collections to the new storage. In 2021, she curated the exhibition "Environmental Injustice - Indigenous Alternatives" at MEG.


Throughout her professional career, Carine Ayélé DURAND has developed not only technical and academic skills, but also team management skills. Her life path has allowed Dr Durand to acquire a mastery of many languages and in addition to her mother tongue, French, she is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese.
