Visit "Helvecia. A Forgotten Colonial History"

Sunday 30 October 2022, 14:30

Photographie d'archive représentant la plantation d'Helvécia

Visit of the temporary exhibition. Sunday 30 October at 2:30 pm. In French only.

Since their chance encounter with Helvecia (Brazil) in 2015, photographer Dom Smaz and journalist Milena Machado Neves have been exploring the history of this former German-Hellenic colony founded in 1818 and whose activity ceased with the abolition of slavery in 1888. The exhibition brings together two seemingly disconnected universes, the past reanimated through archives and the living memory of the community of Helvecia, partly made up of descendants of the enslaved. The photographic documentary by Dom Smaz and the interviews conducted by Milena Machado Neves invite us to a different reading of the colonial heritage in Brazil.
