Instrumental Encounters #2: Pierre Hamon, the breath of ancient American civilizations

Thursday 25 May 2023, 12:30

Pierre Hamon jouant de la flûte de Pan

Concert-Conference on the aerophones of pre-Hispanic civilizations and cultures

The instrumental encounters are the result of a collaboration between the Ateliers d'ethnomusicologie (ADEM) and the MEG. During this musical moment, musicians present their instruments and the repertoire.
Invitation to meditation and dream, but also to rituals and dance, we offer you a journey through the breath, to the rhythm of the percussion of skins and wood, in the sound universe of the flutes of the ancient civilizations of the American continent: double and triple flutes of the ancient civilizations of Mexico, whether they are made of bone, terra cotta, reed, bamboo, wood, feathers ... to seduce the living or communicate with the spirits Presentation from an organological and archaeological point of view of these instruments. This program is therefore an interrogation on the original power of the music generated by this breath and this "ancestral" rhythm, which can lead to trance, meditation and jubilation...
PIERRE HAMON
After having participated since the 80's, as a recorder player, in the development in France of early music and particularly medieval music (member of the Gilles Binchois ensemble, co-director of Alla Francesca, initiator of projects and recordings consecrated to the work of Guillaume de Machaut...), he has been collaborating in a privileged and constant way with Jordi Savall since 1995. In order to deepen his approach to early music, he has taken a close interest in the traditional music of Europe and other cultures. In 1998, he became a disciple of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, a great master of Hindustani music and of the Bansuri flute. His perpetual search for the fundamental gestures and sounds of humanity led him to the fascinating universe of pre-Hispanic flutes and civilizations, and of Amerindian traditions, in connection with nature and the songs of birds. Many of his recordings have received international critical acclaim (Diapasons d'or de l'année, nomination for the Victoires de la Musique...) In 1994, he was invited to teach the first recorder class in France at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, and has been a professor at the CNSMD de Lyon since that time. He is regularly invited for master classes by the main institutions of Early Music, such as the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Royal College of Music of London, the Conservatory of Amsterdam and teaches since 2022 at the Haute École de Musique de Genève...He is the composer and director of the original music of the animated films PACHAMAMA (2018), nominated for the Césars 2019 and JEHANNE by Atam Rasho (2021).
