Finissage of Sound Gallery #2 : "Orpheus, back to the roots

Friday 13 September, 18:00

L'artiste Francisco Meirino en performance

Finissage of "Orpheus". A sound performance by Francisco Meirino. MEG foyer (-1). Friday 13th September. 18h00

To mark the completion of Francisco Meirino's installation Orpheus, which has been on show in the Foyer of the MEG since September 2023, Francisco Meirino will present a sound performance lasting around 30 minutes.Orpheus, Back to the Sources takes us back to the very origins of sound recording and conservation. The idea of going back to the roots by highlighting physical media such as magnetic tape, vinyl and cassette is fascinating, especially in an age when digital technology dominates. During the performance, the first version of Orpheus, in stereo, on magnetic tape presents in its raw state, accompanied by other recordings that were used to create this sound piece, a physical montage that mirrors the multichannel version presented on eight loudspeakers for almost a year in this same venue. The idea will be to play on the media that have captured, archived and preserved fragments of our history, to recall the history and evolution of recording technologies, while paying tribute to the methods used to capture the sounds of the archives preserved within the walls of the MEG.
These 'obsolete' media are not just simple artefacts from the past, they are also tangible witnesses to an era when recording sound was a physical act of creation, a complex process made up of fragility and poetry, without forgetting that each of these media bears the imprint of the gestures of those who handled them. BioFrancisco Meirino is a sound artist. His music combines complex textures, tonal precision and a broad spatial panorama, and fascinates through its physical intensity and the precision of its details. His work explores the tension between programmable hardware and its potential for failure. Her interest lies primarily in what is not supposed to be recorded: the end-of-life of sound devices, background noise, electrostatic interference, non-naturalistic field recordings and the unconventional use of technical equipment and sound diffusion systems, and in how to exploit these various sonic failures in radically different ways in her pieces.
