Deux musiciens

Conference of the Master in ethnomusicology. Presented by Rachel Bolle-Debessay. Auditorium. Wednesday, April 5 at 4:00 p.m.

Dub poetry developed in the Afro-Caribbean diasporas in the 1970s. This kind of poetry has the particularity of existing in different formats: a poem can be performed live, recorded in a studio, with or without music. It can also be transmitted without the presence of the poet and/or the interpreter, in written and published form. By navigating between these different modes of transmission, this poetry has developed a very particular aesthetic. The objective of this talk is to show how this aesthetic emerges from a close relationship between text and music, whether in oral or written form. This discussion will question the place of music in this poetic tradition, too often reduced to a simple sound accompaniment.

Next conference: Wednesday May 16th
