Athos: Echoes from the Holy Mountain is a double LP album, also available on CD. The album is devoted to the liturgical music that has resonated for centuries in the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos, now home to some two thousand monks whose lives are dedicated to prayer and worship.
This repertoire, which seems to evolve outside the usual boundaries of time and space, is rooted in Byzantine chant, essential to monastic life. The art of interpreting these polyphonic chants is an invitation to prayer, contemplation and meditation. A musical compilation includes original recordings from the 1960s from the Samuel Baud-Bovy ethnomusicological collection held in the MEG sound archives (LP2, side A) and recordings made in 2022 (LP2, side B), capturing the essence of liturgical music on Mount Athos.
The compilation also includes new compositions (LP1, sides A and B) inspired by these recordings by contemporary artists.
A book in 3 languages (Greek, French and English) accompanies the release of the album.
